     So I was going to write about Marvels new NEWS OF THE DECADE! Marvel's doing a relaunch/reboot/rethink but are they making the same mistakes DC made? In a word. Yes. But this one incoherent grouping of words pretty much says all I have to say on the subject. Though I'll probably rant on it later when a lot of the trades start coming out in hardcovers.


      Also my mind changed to me wishing to write about something that came up yesterday in a conversation with a reader of my stuffs. That person of conversation wasn't the first one to bring this subject up, I get a lot of emails from people when I release a free project to my Smashwords store saying they do't like that they have to create a account with Smashwords, which is free, to download said free projects.
     Let me talk for a bit  here and hopefully I can address this subject.
     The whole having to create an account thing happens because I'm not releasing as free per say but as a You Set The Price! method of payment; which can be free or however much you wish to pay. You can always read the thing for free first and then if you liked and want to pay something by download again and this time pay. A lot of people choice to do it this way and many for the second download were they pay they choose to send that copy as a gift to a friend which you can do now on Smaswords.
     The reason this whole thing is better for a writer to do is it gives the creator information on downloads/sales. I need this to know what people like and might like more of from me or others I work with. Raw numbers are still a very valuable tool because so many people don't comment or send emails or anything outside of the download/purchase.
     This is especially important when doing ongoing series. Lets say I'm writing two series, which I've been doing, with one I get a lot of responses from readers and the other nothing. You would think the one I get responses for would be the most popular? Not always the case. Take for example Chaos Read and Tin Universe, my two ongoing story series. Tin Universe gets way more emails than Chaos Read which gets hardly any but Chaos Read is downloaded three times more. Now you also have to factor in that one is You Set The Price! and the other is $0.99usd but you get the point in that example which I admit isn't very adapt at all.
     Moving on.
     The point I'm trying to make is that I factor in all of these things when deciding if people would like to see more of one character or groups of characters or types of stories over another. The best thing to happen would be for every reader to email or leave a comment or post a review but that's not going to happen. Some people might hate it so much they don't even want to talk about it but there are also others who just don't do the whole comment or email thing. I view tons of web shows daily but have only commented twice but I make sure to Like, Tweet, Share, or Dislike things.... though to be honest I never dislike something. If I don't like it I just don't hit Like or anything after viewing.
     I know signing up for yet another site sucks. I know if you're purchasing something that means giving another site your credit card information and that sucks, but all of these things help the artists. The process and information gathered through the process is something all independent artist need to learn and use.
     With that said I also know this can drive away readers. I know this was a big issue when I left LuLu and I'm still trying to built back that readership.
     Things like Smashwords, Kickstarter, LuLu and such are attempts to put more control and money in the hands of the artists who do the work. These systems are nowhere near perfect but they are building to something truly special if we all keep working hard to get it there.
     I thought I should mention this since it's come up quite a bit lately. I know when I left LuLu I lost readers but that was a choice because Smashwords offered more to creators in many ways. It's my home right now and I'm working to build that catalog into something that is worth setting up a new account there for.

Where I talk about a great Kickstarter graphic novel and ways of supporting the art you enjoy. Also a question of what's a devil's threesome?

     There are some great projects going on within the internet and I'm not talking about the porn side of Tron either. From webcomics, to webseries, to ebook publishing, and kickstarter type projects and some people having been doing it longer than others, one of said people is Lea Hernandez.
     Most of my news is consumed off the internet. Some of my favorite shows are on the internet and most of my clothing is now purchased from independent designers and shops off the net. Most of that is t-shirts from merchandise stores from website I visit quite often. Now I will say a lot of this has to do with the fact that I'm on the computer for most of the day writing so webshows, podcasts, and ebooks are right there for me to consume quickly during moments of writer frustrations.
     But I will also say that I see more of a creative push online that is heads miles ahead of what you will find in theaters and on television or big publishing. It's not an either or with me but I'm drifting more and more into consuming digital artworks.
     One of my favorite things right now is the chance of seeing a full book of Lea Hernandez's Garlicks. You can read about it here at Bleeding Cool and here at Comic Book Resources and tons of people like Neil Gaiman, Jim Lee, and Kurt Busiek has thrown their praise in support of it.
     The Garlicks: Pandora Orange, Fail Vampire Kickstarter page is here. Looking at that project I don't see how anyone who has the cash to spare wouldn't want to support it but you can support great projects like this even if you don't have the cash to penny in because you my friends live in the future. It's exciting, scary, funny, and bold and that's what scares the suits the most because this is our ride and we can steer it into whatever lane we want.
     One of the things the internet can function as is a living fluid ad for things people enjoy and want to see. That's how a lot of companies like Facebook and Twitter make money in a way because we are the advertising machine behind products but its also something the individual talents and fans can use also without the creepiness of places like Facebook using our information to promote things we are actually trashing but still spreading the word in a no press is bad press thing.
     Lets use this engine to back talents we want to get some spotlight. The projects we believe should reach a wider audience. Talents like Lea should be hounded by companies to work for them but in a way we are lucky because we can see her talented art in projects she owns fully, that goes to supporting her current and future work. As fans we like to open our mouths all the time about "Why doesn't Marvel or DC let this artist do a project they truly uses their talents" but here we are finding creators doing projects they believe in, projects from their hearts, and now we need to pony up, step up, backbone up to what we like to shout our mouths off about as fans and support a project we want to read.
     Amanda Palmer proved that if you work hard and build a audience they will come and support your work but its not all about that size of audience that she has built over the years, which is pretty big and she earned that respect which helped her reach her goal. You have to have a crowd to crowd fund but its not just the talent who can build that crowd, its also the people who support their art. Word of mouth is and always have been the press of the world. Pass the word, RT the Tweet, Share the link, or write a blog entry about why you loved the artist and plan to support their project.
     Fans in my time have saved Television shows, brought back comics series or at least kept them afloat for a little while, but with the future we live in, well, as Amanda Palmer says, "We are the media." and I'm going to say it over and over, its time the fan mouth turned into the full fan action.
     One of the things Kickstarter does is say to the fans, you like this persons art, you like their ideas, you want to see this project live, you want to support them to make more art- ok then support it and it can happen. But its support it or shut up and stop grinding your gears about you wish so and so company would just let artists do their thing.
     And another little push for you to support Lea's project. Here you can read her book Cathedral Child for free online. If you like it push some coins her way, push some support her way and click others into the know about this project. Also look through other Kickstarter projects and see if you find something you like. You can even search the site to find local projects in your area. Buy some merchandise from websites who produce content you fancy because that's how you get to keep enjoying things you like. We might just be the media but what kind of media will we be and what will we support?

     I've always went with my view that people like smaller ebooks and most of my friends have told me the same. When it comes down to it ebooks are like any other book in if its a really good book people will read it no matter the size but mediocre books people wont make the commitment to. That's really not a new thing. Also in the same mind of how I've always said ebooks should help push short stories back into the forefront through on the go quick reads. Do E-book Customers Prefer Longer or Shorter Books?
     Interesting. And the whole LIKE and SHARE system can lead to only the popular product being reproduced but its also part of the new machine until it molds itself into something else we need to find the best ways to use it. When The Internet Deletes Hype

Rants and random but not so random thoughts:
     The DC reboot wasn't a game changer because it didn't change the game. It was a half filled effort to bring in new readers that failed on many levels including releasing too many books so quick, too many early talent changes, releasing so many first volume trades as hardbacks, and introducing a new reality before many have jumped on the old new one.... see even typing that sentence almost turned me off from those books. It would have changed the game if it had grabbed a hold of new readers but it really didn't. There are so many great books in the 52 relaunch but there are also some real stinkers but stinkers aside they failed in doing the main thing set out for the reboot to accomplish and that's to grab new to comics readers.      Also internet, a hot debate was going on last night on our balcony. Is a Devil's Threesome when two guys and a girl have sex and the two guys don't do anything together or just any time sex involves two guys and a girl? I say its the former and would also apply to two girls and a guy if the two girls weren't interested in doing anything together. This is a very important debate tonight and was triggered by my strange writer brain.
     With all the talk about the Before Watchmen books I want to just again say a few things. Are you still buying any Marvel or DC books? Do you read pirated comics? Do you support Hero Initiative? Depending on your answer to those questions you might just be fan boy masturbating Alan Moore and just caught up in the crowd. You are not any better than anyone else. A moral stand...means you have to be standing.
     Interesting piece Maureen Johnson wrote on Blog Tours And The Word No I know since I started back blogging regularly my productivity went off a bit. Like a cliff. It's growing back to where it was but it took time because writing blog updates takes time. Time and thoughts that could be spent on a story but with me I needed it. Blogging has always been something I enjoyed and needed as part of my writing life. One of the main reasons I blog on a schedule now is to keep myself to four entries per week, giving me three days to just focus on fiction. I rant way too much to blog daily. It takes up enough time daily just bullshitting on Facebook and Twitter but I might even cut that out on my three writing days, though that would be a tough withdrawal. I also have people asking me to write reviews for them or guest blog or the like and for the most part I say no or only accept if I'm getting paid. Otherwise its just another time suck from a story. It really has to be a project I'm interested in or an idea I really needed to get out. It takes me forever to edit my chaos sushi writing into something a few people might be able to understand so its not a good thing for me try the overload dragon.
     I think the best option for pain management, that doesn't involve a ax, when you don't have insurance, is over stimulation of the brain through learning shit. BOOK YEAH!

     The Ultraverse had some really cool books. And the fact that they are never hitting the light of day again it seems has allowed a lot of other books to seem original while ripping off Ultraverse ideas. It's a shame that people now wont get the chance to read Prime or see the great artwork George Perez did on Ultraforce.      There are going to be places in the U.S. soon where people should and will stop paying any taxes or any attention to the law because why do so if the state, the government isn't supporting you.
     Every time someone waves a flag whenever a time on the calendar tells them to do so or shouts SUPPORT THE TROOPS at protesters I think of stories like these. I support the troops by talking about getting them and their families fair treatment while in uniform and in retirement. Where I talk about stories growing or splitting into a different story? and the stories that change and how it can be a good thing.

 

   I've said for a long time that I think it's bullshit that painters, artists, singers, song writers, dancers, and most other talents in the arts can have works in progress, works that change but a writer of prose has to have one story finished complete for a forever watch when its sent out into the word.
   Musicians can play songs that are barley finished in concerts when the song will not go out in mass for years. They can change songs at will and nothing is said but George Lucas makes changes in his film or a comic creator makes changes and people scream like they own the story.
   No Star Wars films and comics aren't prose but I gave those as examples to show how one art form is allowed to grow a story while when another does the same its seen a roasting a baby on stick.
   For the most part prose stories aren't allowed growth, change, and without growth they are also maybe missing out on a chance of finding great discovers that can come from change, from being allowed to grow.
   I've gotten into some good discussions with friends in publishing over my view that the biggest thing digital publishing offers for writers beyond controlling your work, and this is part of controlling your work, is also letting the work evolve. I say stop playing creationist storytelling, let that story walk onto land if it can.
   In the case of Nova Ren Suma's Dani Noir, which I loved, my review, being moved from a Middle Grade book to a YA book with changes within and a change of name and title, I find it is a very interesting thing and would like to see how Fade Out differs from Dani Noir.
   My only big issue with this might be that now a lot of younger readers may not get a chance to read Dani Noir as I did. It's such a great book I hope they keep both versions in print. I'm hoping success for both versions.
   Throw in note: if you not reading books by Nova Ren Suma you are missing out on stories by one of the best writers writing today.
   This isn't the first time this happened in big time publishing. It actually happens a lot more than people think. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes its just a move from Adult to YA without any changes except maybe a different cover. Sometimes its a move from one genre to the next.
   Now comparing this instance with Dani Noir/Fade Out to what I'm talking about when it comes to the Evolving Story isn't apt. I'll admit that right now but I just wanted to use it to show changes in story aren't really unusual in prose, it just seen that way, and it gives me a chance to bridge into that subject I've wanted to discuss for a while here in greater depth.
   People tell me releasing a work before its "pefect" is a big mistake. But why? First is a story ever truly perfect? No bodies stories out there walk on water. Though Neil Gaiman's lips are dreamy......anyway, What one editor considers ready to release another looks at as being in need of a lot of work.
   People tell me self publishing is a terrible thing because most of the time, unless you have the money to hire a professional editor, it's a work that goes out that isn't ready for publication.
   I read a lot, my friends read a lot more, Mar reads as much as anyone I've ever meet and anyone who reads a lot will tell you there are tons of books published through "big publishers" which could use a couple more edit passes. Need another set of eyes or have their editor "fired" That was actually said to me by a editor who works for a big company.
   But not everyone has the money to hire an editor, or has friends and loved ones who will read over their stories, or even has access to find things like writing groups. I've tried working with several writing groups but they more often than not writers groups confused with being a book reading slash book shitting on group. Now stand out and don't be confused by your group identity, I'll love you either way, but the point is everyone doesn't have access to support systems like everyone else. Nor should the "normal" support and learning systems be the only ones recognized.
   One of the reasons I like the idea of the evolving sushi story is how it puts your neck out there. It throws you into the pool to learn to swim.  It creates a very thick skin. It teaches. And it allows for change. You know change, that thing humanity has enslaved, killed, and destroyed to try to hold back?
   Change and control should be in the hands of the writer. I hate some of the changes George Lucas has made to Star Wars but they are his stories. His right to control them. I hate DRM on efiles but its up to the artist to decide if they want to use it, not you. I think as long as the changes are made by the creator or approved by them then its a good thing.
   I have friends in big time publishing. People who are writers, editors, in marketing, and work at the printers. I have no problem with anyone going the route of traditional publishing to make their mark but the one of the things you do lose is how much control you have over change. I wont be like some self publishers who say its a price to be paid. Lets not get over dramatic, its a choice. Oh, and lets make this clear every self publisher would "sell out" in second if the offer was put on the table.
   What people like Amanda Palmer are doing should be applauded because its not only creating a direct line from the fan to the creator but its putting the changes and control further in the choice of the creator if that want they want.
   What podcasters, webcomic makers, webseries creators, webfilm makers, ebook writers, are doing should be applauded because they are not only producing some really good works of art, they are fighting for our rights by the mere attempt to change the system.
   Within this mess of writing I guess what I need to say is what I want more than anything else for creators is a right to change.
   Dani Noir becoming Fade Out isn't a bad thing. I don't know what changes will be made to translate it to a YA book besides the cover and title change. I loved Dani Noir. I think Nova Ren Suma is one of the best writers today. My only wish was that these changes were totally in the writers hands and that all writers "published" and "self-published" were allowed to change their work, to evolve their work if that's the road they want to walk.
   There was a time that every book was truly unique because they were hand written. The original sushi books. And there is nothing wrong with experimenting with a story until it finds it footing and finds its audience. And taking a reader along for that journey could be a very cool thing. It's not for everyone, I get that. Not for every reader and not for every writer but the changes should be choice and not ripped like you are throwing fire into church. I'm just throwing my story into the wild.
   I'm just looking for a better model for the writer and believe that sometimes a little raw or not quite ready doesn't hurt whether its in your food choices or publishing choices.

   When on my last whisper when it comes to writing I see what people like @amandapalmer and all the great webcomic, podcast, film, self-publishing, and website talents are doing and its easier to take in air.
   I truly feel this is a time for the people to reach for the story, to hold the truth. It's not going to be easy and maybe at times not very fun but we have to go for it, fight for it. 
   This is artists taking hold of their power, taking control of the story. High ups to Amanda Palmer. I also love what someone replied to her on her Twitter when people said she was begging doing a Kickstarter- "Beggars don't give back."

AMANDA PALMER KICKSTARTER

   This is story about a retailer refusing to stock Before Watchmen is stupid because let me ask this, does this store carry any other DC or Marvel books? If they do this it is nothing more than playing to the crowd.
   From how people are acting about Before Watchmen you'd think someone had nailed Alan Moore to fucking cross or something. He wasn't the first person to get screwed by a publisher and some of those talents were screwed in not so legal fashions.
   Marvel, DC, and a ton of publishers have used and abused and tossed to the side creators for profits. Lets address the over all issue instead of icon worshiping. As its been said if you care about creators how about supporting independent creators, how about fighting piracy, how about helping out Hero Initiative: 
RETAILER REFUSES TO STOCK BEFORE WATCHMEN


   Yes it creates wonderful boners. I know viagra can be used for real medically conditions but they dish those things out like candy because they are a male I want to fuck someone drug.
   I'm so pissed about the lack of outcry and rage at how women have been and are are continuing to be attacked. If you seriously think women aren't being attacked look, read, open you eyes.
   These attacks are to push back the rights for which so many women and men have died for back not years but decades.
   Don't even talk to me if you think women aren't being attacked because my response at this moment, right now, will be a simple FUCK YOU! I'm tired of being rational and soft spoken on this. I'm done within that. I'm mad, I'm pissed and fuck you for not caring about the women in your life as these things continue to happen.

The N.F.L. once again cracks down on something they knew was happen but when it blew up publicly BOOM! I understand all the why's but this still feels like, "Don't you dare drink son. *shakes glass, nothing but ice now* Give me a sec I'll be right back."
