Where I talk about Free Comic Book Day, the FA Cup, and some crazy shit

   I waited until Mar got home from work so we could go to Free Comic Book Day together. My local comic shop is Famous Faces And Funnies. A great store. She was very tired from a Jedi Younglings riot at her library. I told her Anakin would have taken care of that problem; so with her being tired and me being anti-social we just went in real quick and grabbed some things and back out.
   The owner told us they were having their best FCBD ever so that was great to hear. Loved seeing a big crowd still there late in the day and just now enjoyed looking through tons of photos on their Facebook page.
   Most of the free comics were gone by the time I got there but I don't go for the free books anyways. I go to support the store and buy some stuff. I did pick up a couple free books but also emptied my folder and grabbed the first trade of the relaunch of Animal Man from DC. When I asked people online which trade of the New DC 52 I should buy this one got more votes than any other.
   I've always liked the Animal Man character. I have all the previous trades. Love the Grant Morrison run and also when he was in Justice League Europe. I'll be picking up volume two when it comes out and I guess also Swamp Thing Volume One by how this trade ended.

   From my folder was the latest Doctor Who and Saga. Doctor Who #16. I would give it 4 out of 5 stars. Good ending to a nice story. Matthew Dow Smith's art perfect fit for this story. Over time I really started to love his art on Doctor Who stories but I think I heard he would be leaving those books so I'm a little sad to hear that but will take a lot at any future projects they have coming out.
   I gave 4 out of 5 stars for Saga #2. I'm loving this story but I might wait to read the rest in trades. What I do a lot of the time is I will test a books for a few issues to see if I might want to pick up future trades. I just don't have the room for tons of comics issues anymore. Most of the time I either donate to libraries, trade with someone, or giveaway the single issues I get.
   I have every comic from the old Valiant days. Actually I'm missing maybe five but I'm close to have a complete set. I still need to pick up some of the recent released hardback trades which were released. Reading the FCBD special has my eyes open. I'll try at least the #1 for each series.
   I liked the art of the FCBD The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo preview. I might pick up the graphic novel. I liked all the movies and the first book. This seems to be a adaption of the books. Has a very Vertigo feel to it just by the layout and art along. I know several people that didn't like that cover design, I thought it was cool.
   The main free comic I wanted on FCBD was the Guild/Buffy flip book since I love both of those properties. I really liked both stories and pick up anything Buffy or Guild related. Can't wait for the next collection of Guild comics to come out.

   Onto something else from the weekend, my team Liverpool played Chelsea in the FA Cup on Saturday and went down 2-1. It was a exciting FA Cup Final but I can't bring myself to talk about it anymore than this short little ramble.

   In future news Mitt Romney says its ok for states to ban interracial marriage, and states can allow dueling- that's ok with Mitt in the future.    And and for the people who have said "But this book sucks...bla bla bla" the last few days. Sorry but if your argument for banning a book is based on quality, you are as lost in cloudy thoughts as those wanting to ban it based on content.
   Another thing, people need to understand it wasn't a librarian who banned this book. It was a paper pusher, a Library Administrator with no sense of cause and effect. Or sense at all from comments which were made. Again no peer review, no decision with the individual library branches. And now guess who has to clean up this mess, the librarians out front.
   Librarians and libraries have had a more positive effect on my life than any school or teacher- church or preacher. They introduced me to the world. The didn't cut off my destinations or block my dreams.

Where I talk about Camelot 3000, Drift, Free Comic Book Day, and This Is Not A Test

The book I'm currently reading is Drift by Rachel Maddow. I'm finding it really interesting to look over the history of the military and how in a lot of ways our leaders have failed the military and failed the country as a whole. I'm not normally a nonfiction reader except for news and when I'm doing research but I love this book.

Someone earlier today asked me if I could recommend 10 books right off the top of my head without thinking. I'm going to do the list without thinking bu then ramble some comments on each one.
Just a warning about things coming off the top of my head. My head has a weird shape so these books might be so inclined. I thought this would be cool to do and also how about picking up some of these which are comics at your local comic book store during Free Comic Book Day. Most stores have sales during that event.

Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra
*I'm still behind in buying these volumes but my love for them has never passed. One of the best stories period of the past twenty years. I usually pick up at least one volume every year at Free Comic Book Day and will probably do so again this year.
A example of a great comic store. Mine recommended this book to me a long time ago and it was just the first of many things they pointed me towards based on things they knew I had liked in the past.
Batwoman Elegy by Greg Rucka and J.H. Williams III
*You can start with the Elegy story or the new DC 52 first story of Hydrology. One of my favorite comics of the past ten years are these Batwoman stories. With art that shows you storytelling skill that can be breathtaking at times and writing that seems straightforward but hits you with sucker punches when needed I can not recommend this book more highly.
Camelot 3000 by Mike W. Barr and Brian Bolland
*Whenever someone tells me to recommend a comic they may not have heard of I point them in the direction of this book. As a fan of Arthurian Myth since I was a kid this just blew me away the first time I found the first issue at a bookstore in the mall. With its new take, great art, and nice twists it showed me there were great adventure comics outside superheros. When I think of it right now it actually reminds me Game Of Thrones for some reason? HBO get on that.
Crisis On Infinite Earths by Marv Wolfman and George Perez
*This was the first DC comics I ever read. Up to this point I had only knew of the DC characters from cartoons and TV shows. Ever since that moment I've tried to buy everything George Perez has done. Still the best well crafted crossover book ever. The writer and artist took what could have been a mess, as a lot of company wide events have been since, and they put you in the middle of a universe falling apart. Heroes fighting a losing battle and while doing all of that each rescue, each death was felt.
Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa
*I loved this series. I went in thinking it didn't have much weight to it but it does. This series dealt with brotherhood, military actions, war crimes, what a hero is, patriotism, genocide, and sacrifice.
This Is Not A Test by Courtney Summers
*Courtney Summers 4th book, this story of zombies goes beyond being about walking flesh sticks into a story about many things that we face in life and as with a lot of great horror stories it shows how horrible real life really is.
You can find my review here but I will say this also. I'm not a zombie fan. I'm always found them boring and still think they aren't the best fit for a long ongoing story but for a self-contained book you wont find a better zombie story than This Is Not A Test from a writer who has did nothing but get better with each book she has written.
Imaginary Girls by Nova Ren Suma
*One of the few books I've given 5 stars to. One another is actually This Is Not A Test. My review for this book can be found here. A story about siblings, reality, and whether reality matters at all.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season Eight by a lot of talented people
*If you are a Buffy fan from the TV series give this series a shot. I consider that series to be one of the best in Television history and I loved these books. They are on Season Nine now but as I only buy trades I'm always behind. It captures the essence of the series but moves on from it as it needed to do.
The Name Of The Star by Maureen Johnson
*My review for this book is here. Since I was a young messed up kid I've read everything I could find on the Jack The Ripper killings and when Mar told me Maureen Johnson had a book on the subject coming out I was in. In like gin..... I don't know what I meant there, read my review. This update is longer than I planned for it to be.
Secret Six by Gail Simone and many others
*I say start with Villains United and go from there. The title link takes you to a link for a read order. If you don't have Secret Six on your list of the best comics of the past 10 years you should be kicked in the balls or...... Mar just told me punched in the tits hurts also. Shit! It's does hurt. I just got punched in the tit. So that's what you get; so go read these books or SUFFER!

Where I talk about Marvel movies, getting behind but being ok with it, organizing, and Free Comic Book Day.

Mar didn't have to work over the weekend so we just spent time together reading, eating, and last night started watching Marvel movies leading up to the Avengers. That meant I had a great weekend but I didn't get a chance to do much of anything else; which I'm fine with that because the woman I love is the most important thing in my life and no matter what these types of simple weekends, you can't take them back from me, because they mean that much.

We watched Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk last night. Still love Iron Man so much but I'll say something here that I've argued with friends over and over about this point- The Incredible Hulk wasn't a terrible movie. What it was, was a movie that didn't need to be made. It felt when it came out and still feels like they made largely the same movie as the first one. The only real purpose this movie had was to fit in references that would tie into the other Marvel movie line. People say Wolverine Origins and Captain America were made to tie in, and I disagree those movies stood on their own, but I will say the only purpose whatsoever for The Incredible Hulk was a look ahead to the future and the Avengers movie.

Oh, and my favorite between the Hulk and the Incredible Hulk was the Hulk. At least Ang Lee saw that a Hulk movie needed something different in its look or it was just going to be a lazy in story boring action film. Hulk has and always will be a better fit as a TV show. Hell, if you write well crafted stories the Hulk wouldn't even have to be in every episode. Bruce Banner as a character is a very interesting one but with a big blockbuster movie people want blockbuster payout and unless you turn it into a disaster film, which I think is the only way to go with a Hulk movie, then you will fail.

I didn't even open my laptop over the weekend. I needed to get away from the computer and writing so bad that being away felt so great because when I picked up a notebook to write for a few minutes last night after Mar went to bed it was a glorious feeling. You just need to step back sometimes. But with that having been said I still need another day or two to finish off Chaos Read #5 which was due to release today. I hate missing deadlines. I'm sorry to anyone who was waiting to read it today. I'll have that ready to upload by the end of the week for sure.

On to more serious subjects, I didn't play Madden 11 Sunday so no Monday Madden 11 update on my team the Richmond Bulldawgs. I'll play their third pre-season game this coming Sunday and update on the following Monday.

Sometimes even if it makes more work for you later you need to step away from things before said weaknesses in said things that are a huge part of your life drive you off the cliff you may have been standing near. Stated with more clarity- My stupid was getting the best of me.

This week for me will mainly be filled with finishing up Chaos Read and trying to get our apartment organized. I need to get my writing area streamlined. To actually use the filing cabinet we have will be a good start. To organize my reference materials. Then after I get my stuff straight I will tackle Mar's crafting area and then the rest of the apartment. Need to get these tasks started to see what I need to do more in the future to keep us from almost drowning in our own mess.

Again no regrets on taking a weekend off from everything but I am behind now. I hope to get the chance go to Free Comic Book Day at my local comic shop Famous Faces And Funnies. They always have a great FCBD but even if I can't attend the day I'm going to head there a day or two after to pick up some trades I've been looking forward to reading. And always remember your local comic shop pays for those "free comics", they don't get them for free; so make sure when you attend the event to buy something.

I do know one thing about this week I'm going to see the Avengers because even though it might be tough for me to miss one of my favorite holidays, FCBD, I'm  not going to miss something I'm been waiting for all my life.

THE TITLE IS: FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 08

We went to see Iron Man yesterday; which I really ejoyed. The movie had a lot more humor to it than I was expecting. And yes the after credits part was really cool also. We went with Wave's sisters Trill and M-Low. After the movie we went to the Ben & Jerry's that's right beside the movie theater. I had the ONE Cheesecake Brownie which is Cheesecake Ice Cream with Cheesecake Brownie Chunks. Yea, that's going to help my failing health. I got a white ONE braclet for purchasing it...though Wave snagged it right away. After ice cream we headed out for the local comic shop and FREE COMIC BOOK DAY!

My local comic book shop is Famous Faces And Funnies. That link will take you to their MySpace site. They can also be found here. At one time, when I had money, before I had a girlfriend and a life I put a lot of money each month into that store like a true lonely geek book. We just made a quick stop in yesterday though because I do not really like crowds in tight spaces and any crowd in a store, even a good size store bothers me a little, especially when filled with brats with parents who think parenting is yelling across the store to behave. I picked up from the free table BONGO COMICS FREE-FOR-ALL, DAN DARE, HELLBOY, TINY TITANS, AVENGERS INVADERS SKETCHBOOK, X-MEN, and also DC UNIVERSE 0 which they were giving away free. I like my local comic book store because they also work with local libraries.

I won a copy of theSpiderwoman: Origin hardback after just walking into the door and putting my ticket into the bucket. Wave picked up a Simpson's puzzle that she has been eyeballing for a while and below are pictures of it and her working on it after clearing off the livingroom table.

Myself and Wave went over and did the hanging out with good people thing with Robin Bird.

Hey, Robbin. You said you may stop by the blog so I just wanted to say thank you for inviting us over. We always like visiting. With all of our hectic schedules it is hard to find time to just be with friends; so, it was great getting to spend time with wine, conversation, and Playboys! Sorry if I ran my mouth too much. See what happens when you give me drinks. Next thing you know I’m seeing Pirates and putting Data into Christ like posses.

Robin is one of those rare people who come into your life who you get the pleasure to call friend. And you know what? It is not about what they do for you or anything of the like. Some friends, those who last past heated conversations, distance of time and well distance in distance apart, those friends enrich you life by being part of your life. They create good memories you walk around with, they deepen your steps through life. You do not need great relationships of love and friendship to live a fulfilling life I think but it sure does make life better for it. Our, Wave and myself, Our growing friendship with Robin is such as this, an enhancement to our lives.

As to Free Comic Book Day, Wave was not feeling well so she could not make a trip over to the local shop to pick me up some freebies, which was good since when I got home we just chilled and spent time together which we do not get the chance to do that often. Before heading out to Robbin Bird’s place I went and picked up Chinese for us as well as a Coke for dinner for Wave and a iced coffee for her later.

I’m falling asleep at the key board now so I give you a good day with this.
