   Damn that storm that knocked out our power and my game last week because I got my ass kicked yesterday when in that game I played before I played much better on offense and defense.

Free Comic Book May
   My local comic book shop, Famous Faces And Funnies, celebrates not only Free Comic Book Day but a full month long celebration every Saturday in May. And that's not counting their game nights, quiz nights, and other great events they are always having and not just one day out of the year.
   Saturday I went in planning to pick up the first Batman New 52 trade but it was in hardcover. HARDCOVER! Anyone who knows me knows the only thing I mindlessly ramble on about more when it comes to books, besides photos covers is HARDCOVER books.
   Ok, here's my issue when it comes to hardcover cover and comics. I've already ranted about this on my Facebook and Twitter but I'll rant more here.
   I hate hardcovers higher price so that right away ends up making it bad for me who is on a budget, tight budget for what comics I can buy every month. We spend more in May than normal at the comic shop but we like to give them a extra little boost this time of year.
   But another thing is DC lost sales from me because both New 52 Batman and Justice League came out first in hardcover. Why when trying to pull in new readers with a reboot do you release two big books first in HC? Just not a fan of books coming out first in hardcover. Big fans will buy but with me and casual shoppers, that $24 goes elsewhere.
   I've had several people tell me it's worth the price of a hardcover and I'm not saying I don't think it is, I'm saying why not take advantage of the new start situation in a broader marketing standpoint. 
   But DC being marketing buttheads aside I picked up Excalibur The Sword Is Drawn and a trade gift for someone else. Need to get the rest of the Claremont/Davis run on Excalibur. That was my favorite X-Men book for a long time. They had a lot of good trades on sale Saturday. $5 trades. 60% off. Good stuff. And if DC releases more books in hardcover first maybe I'll pick up more Excalibur or something else I've been meaning to get.
   So far of the DC New 52 trades I've only picked up Animal Man {not in hardcover} but I was already to buy Justice League and Batman also. Hell I was going to buy Justice League International but I was pissed seeing Batman was in HC.

   Since I pissed off a friend in a big time ranty sort of way on text messaging yesterday when I said Hellboy is a better comic book movie than Batman Begins, and I'm right on that subject, speaking of Hellboy check out the first part of a motion comic here. They should have animated a earlier Hellboy story though, this one takes forever to do anything in part one and then not much. But it's worth checking out and seeing if it gets better.


Rants and such:
   On the way to the grocery store over the weekend we saw a church sign that read WOMEN WHO FEAR GOD SHOULD BE PRAISED. Did you hear my scream of rage around Saturday?
   It's continues to amaze that on one hand almost every major religion talks about how numbers are dwindling and young people are turning away from the major faith mythologies but they are over and over again pushing people away with their sexism, homophobia, and bigotry.

This is the first Matt Smith 11th Doctor comic story I've read since I no longer can afford to buy Doctor Who magazine and there has probably been tons in the magazines already. 

This looks to be a limited series released alongside the start of the ongoing series which has been really confusing to some of my friends who asked me about the start of the 11th Doctor at IDW. I hope IDW continues doing the one shots they were also doing towards the end of the 10th Doctor's time in the comics. I enjoyed a lot of those.

I've always had a problem with tie in books, comics, and the like from television series and movies that fall flat, end up bland, or seem rushed or lacking a huge amount of effect. I've talked about this many times and I'm not saying the art or writing in A Fairtale Life is bad but with a high profile property like Doctor Who it makes me wonder sometimes why they don't go after big name writing or art teams? Is it budget reasons? Do they just know they will sale so many copies just based on it being a Doctor Who product and thus don't really go out of their way to try and do the same that a publisher would do with something they own? 

No matter the thinking, most tie in projects lay down and do nothings as I have said before in a bland boring nature. Doctor Who has had a better track record than a lot of other properties as the Classic comics{now being reprinted by IDW also}the New Adventure novels, the original BBC novels, and the Big Finish audios are a lot of great stories that stretch the characters, push the writers abilities, reach for great talents, and they might not all be great but I wouldn't call any of them bland. But then again, the current state of Doctor Who novels and comics.....well, I need to get on with the review of this issue and hope cash for sales of a good amount of copies isn't "That's good enough" in the future.

A number of scifi stories have explored the idea of vacation planets. If I remember correctly Doctor Who has done it a few times itself but the key on this topic is not that the idea has been done before but how well this story does it and if it also adds something new to those ideas for those who have read these types of stories before.

A Fairytale Life has some nice little setup elements so I'm not going to rack it because it does everything it needs to do to set up a good story so we will have to see with Part 2 whether this story goes anywhere.

This review was going to go up yesterday but we didn't have power all day due to a normal Florida summer storm and then Mar's car died in the middle of the highway as she was taking her younger sister home; so there went anything getting done on Wednesday.

I will try to get a couple reviews of Torchwood issues up today also.

And here we find ourselves at the end game of the Final Sacrifice story and the 10th Doctor ongoing series. The one thing I got the most out of this series was how much I enjoyed the character of traveling companion Emily. I really loved this character and her visual design. I really wished we had more time and more stories with her but this is what we have. She's probably my favorite new companion outside Doctor Who television since Evelyn in the 6th Doctor Big Finish Audios and Fitz in the BBC 8th Doctor novels.


Matthew was the Doctor's other original traveling companion at the end of this series but he became more a story tool than an actual character. He probably could and would have been much more if he would have had more stories to have his characters explored but I found him a waste here and merely a tool and a main character should never just be a story tool. When that happens you end up with Steph....nay, I'm rushing to get a lot done this week but I'm going to try and keep from being mean or ass hat like.


But onto the story itself and if you don't like messy timey wimey stuff you will more than likely not like elements of how this story ended. I don't mind that stuff so much because I've been reading time travel stories for years so none of that stuff gets to me even when not written well but the thing that did bother me here was how things ended for Emily. As I said I really liked her as a companion but the ending sort of puts her away for good in a fashion. 


Final Sacrifice was a bland story that had some really cool moments in the last two parts and ends the IDW adventures of the 10th Doctor on a so so note. Even the recall to the First Doctor at the very end with a quote was so cut and paste you would think the writer probably did so by visiting a Doctor Who quotes website.


I'll say it here again. I really think the Doctor Who comics need new and fresh writers and this would have been a good point for Tony Lee to move aside for other writers. He has done a nice job with these stories for the most part but some of the better IDW Doctor Who comics have been the one shot issues. Now I know he is writing the 11th Doctor series{working my way to them}so I hope he steps up his game.


After rereading that last bit I have to say that when I review Doctor Who stuff the true fanboygeek in me really comes out with gushing, complaining, and bitching.

It's been a while reviewed any single issues of the Doctor Who comics but since I was reminded tonight about this and the fact that writers will do anything to keep from doing the work they are suppose to be doing, in my case tonight editing a short story, I'm writing this review. Maybe I can catch up on the books before the next issue comes out and then start doing them as they come out? Hey, I finally started reviewing series episodes this year so you never know.

I haven't even read any of the Matt Smith Doctor Who or Torchwood comics so I'm a bit behind. But lets get on with this issue's review. I'll try to do a couple a day, one in the AM and one in the PM until I catch up.

I haven't been the biggest fan of the Final Sacrifice story up to this point but this issue is when the story kicks into high gear and levels up to a cliffhanger worthy of the TV series. This issue in a way has a old school classic Doctor Who series feel to it with the two warring groups, an Earth colony, and a tie that unites them at the last second but were that would be the point in the old series when the story ends here it just cliffhangs into a death, a planet wide crisis, and a dark decision for both the Doctor and one of his traveling companions.

Coming next issue. The last IDW issue for the 10th Doctor.

REVIEW: Doctor Who - issue #15

Runaways, Vol. 1

I had always wanted to check out this series as I had heard so much about it and then recently a Mar's library got a number of the volumes in. I was not let down an really hope when they do make this into a movie they do not let me down either. The Marvel Universe is not as strong in my eyes without this series currently going. Though I enjoyed the artwork and the story, I have to say I was hooked right away by how strong each of the characters were.

I read this because Mar has read all of the Vampire Kisses stories. I have to be up front and say this is the only thing I have read of the stories. I wasn't that pulled in to make me want to read other books in the series either prose or manga.

This review is going to be full of spoilers; which I usually try to avoid but just to let you know...I'm letting you know.

I know a number of people had problems with Identity Crisis, Infinite Crisis, and The Omac Project but one thing I could never understand; which a lot of people had a problem with and the characters of Batman and Superman turned away their friendship with Wonder Woman over was her killing Maxwell Lord. So you would have rather she let him live after he told her under the influnce of the magic lasso that he would use Superman as a weapon of mass destrction? She's an Amazon warrior. She has never killed with ease but she saved lives in a very simple situation. It wasn't complicated to me. By them going after her they are basically saying her taking a moral stand is better than thousands of people dying by her not acting. Superman and Batman questioning her actions so strongly speak only of complete bullshit on their parts. Batman saying he is taking the high road with The Joker places blood on his hands every time The Joker kills and to say otherwise is also complete bullshit in my eyes. It's easy to say after the fact that things may have turned out differently if she hadn't killed Lord but she showed how much of a hero she truly is by making a hard choice during the split second she had to make that choice. That's what a hero does.

After picking up a number of Wonder Woman trades at one of our local libraries I found myself in a time of Wonder Woman reading starting with Down To Earth.

The first issue of this collection would make a great pre-credits seaquance for a movie and if we were talking about how to approach Wonder Woman movie in a movie as a whole Greg Rucka's run on the character wouldn't be that bad of a direction to go. I would have loved to have seen Joss Whedon do that movie but I guess we will have to live with him doing Avengers. I love Mr. Whedon's work but Avengers?

This collection has everything a blockbuster movie would need. It contains an underlined theme with Ares and the protesters going for sequals and has a big fight scene at the end. I recommend this trade and Rucka's Wonder Woman books as a whole. 3 out of 5 stars. I know, I don't always do stars for my reviews but most of the time my reviews don't really resemble a "review" that often either.

This as the first U.S. market centered Doctor Who Annual is very  hit and mess which is how I would describe the whole of the Doctor Who output from IDW. I buy any and all Doctor Who books but if these stories were not Doctor Who related I can't honestly say that I would have picked up many of what IDW has put out. I go into each book with the eyes of excitement and hope that they will get better and not just fall into the line many books based on movies or Tv shows have, a line of just getting by on the name alone.

But lets get to the stories within this annual. The first story Ground Control gets 2 stars but what stands out to me is the Doctor saying he had never seen a Time Lord regenerate before? Really? That's a little hard to take in. I don't remember him watching someone regenerate from the series but not in his whole life? So not even during The Time War? And if he was just saying he had never saw himself regenerate...why would that be that big a deal?

Story two, The Big Blue Box gets 3 stars only because it is a nice little Doctor side trip story. I love small little stories within the big epic nature of most Doctor Who stories, that's why I use to love the short page stories that once appeared in Doctor Who Magazine.

Story three, To Sleep Perchance To Scream is the type of pre-regeneration Doctor Who story done many times in many short stories and a billion times in fan fiction. Love the art by Al Davison though. He's fast becoming one of my favorite artists to tackle the Doctor Who universe.

The highlight of the Annual is the last story by Tony Lee and Matthew Dow Smith because its a nice little sidestep that also leads into the last big story of the 10th Doctor's IDW era.

Overall this Annual has a nice mix of art but for the first Annual I wish IDW had gotten more big name writers and artists for this Annual because it was a big missed chance to draw in new readers. From the materials alone I enjoyed this Annual but from a marketing mindset I'm left wondering a big WHY to the planning?

If you have no problems with a little Canon Wank then you may enjoy this four part story, I did. Issue #2 left as The Doctor was arrested by The Shadow Proclaimation by the hands of the Judoon. I will not get into all of the mentions and appearances from The Doctor's past but to say that I really enjoyed some of the writing on the subject that I've not seen attacked before of what happens after The Doctor has defeated an enemy. Effects on that enemies people as a whole is something that I don't think has been approached before and that alone is saying something with a property that has been around for as long as the Doctor Who universe has been.

I still have my misgivings on whether Tony Lee will be able to keep up the quaility of writing needed in the long run for a series such as this but so far I have to admitt he has done so. Fugitive is a story that starts in a fashion seen so many times in sci-fi and several times in Doctor Who itself but it takes many little directions not appraoched that often that the story keeps a fresh appraoch to it. I did not have much hope for this series being anything more than just a licensed book sold to hardcore fans. I mayself being one but so far the art and writer has been much more than that and I hope Tony Lee and the team can keep that up for many issues into the future.

To get caught up on the series in reviews to current issues I will be doing reviews of each storyline until I find mayself with the new issues coming out. From there I will review each issue as it comes out.

This four part story is one of political chess pieces involving peace not for no more war but peace for a smaller scale of war and less choas and this was a approach I really found interesting.

A little pet peeve of mine with writers writing for the 10th Doctor. Ok, writers, enough with the "One warning" thing. It's been done to death by now. Even The Doctor doesn't repeat himself this often.

Old enemies and sometimes allies find appearances of worth in here and not just thrown in either. There's actually a point to most of it. Talk of characters accross the board including the Big Finish audio stories finds me really wanting to give this story 3 out of 5 stars but my bit of not faith in not wanting to get my hopes up for the series to coutinue with the good appraoches all around found in the start to this series has me giving it 2 out of 5 and I know that does not do it justice. Also this paragraph sucks.

I'm glade IDW has taken on the time honored tradation of giving us new compaions for these new stories. The comics of the past, the novels, the audios, have all done so and issue #6 does this also. I like that because by doing so each take on the Doctor Who Universe has its own fresh take that doesn't exist anywhere else.

To end here I want to say I hope IDW keeps up and coutinues the quality of writing and art they have given The Doctor and his travels both in this series, the one-shots, and the reprints. As a geektastic Doctor Who fan I will be buying every issue that comes out but that doesn't mean I don't want great stories also and so far IDW has done so. Here's hoping IDW gets the license also for Torchwood, U.N.I.T., Sarah Jane, and others from the whole of the Doctor Who universe because I think to this point they have did nothing but keep a move forward take on something people world wide love greatly.

REVIEW: THE STRANGE CASE OF ORIGAMI YODA

My gf, a fine hard working YA librarian, brought this book home thinking I would like it and I did enjoy reading it. It was a nice quick read while I was reading a number of graphic novels.

I would recommend this book if you or someone you know enjoyed the Wimpy Kid book series. The story has a lot of heart and has some really nice character work within its pages; which I wasn't expecting to be honest. I thought this was going to be one of those throw off licensed books but it was not.

As I said before this book had heart, it had truth, it was funny, and it was a few hours spent on a nice day on our balcony after watering our balcony garden. I've been doing a lot of reading out there of late.

Mar, How am I suppose to answer comments like that? And you can really make a guy want to leave work in one dash of a rush.

As to a e-mail from a reader, and thank you for visiting, who asked do I think I should be allowed to tell Jesus to go fuck himself? Well, I actually said fuck you to Jesus so it is a little different but in fact yes I do think I should be allowed. And in fact even if there was a law saying other wise I guess I would be one of the first to lose his head over something like that. I think when I die and if I meet him he would be way more pissed about how people like yourself treat others than something I wrote in a online blog which is read by about 100 people daily; which in the long run is like whispering something to your next door neighbor and them never repeating it. My religious beliefs and beliefs in general are mine and mine alone and I share what I wish of them but growing up in a family of preachers and being a preachers son who has read and studied the bible more than most who like to spat off at the mouth I will tell you I find love and comfort in those words even if I do not believe all of them as fact. Hell if I know how people like you get what you get from reading it? Hate is hate anyway you wish to decorate and paint it. But then again you stare at the tile floor long enough you can see any pattern you wish to see and if you lie to yourself enough you will believe the lie.

Geek Speak:

As Wave was dancing off into sleep last night I tried to plant a subliminal message for her to stop by the local comic book shop while I was at work for Free Comic Book Day and pick me up some stuff. I will have to see if it worked when I get home.

Back To Reality:

With a strong backtrack to change the beginning because new characters wished to be born I found myself now walking back through the short story adding more substance these new characters bring to the story. They couldn’t show up at the end, No! Just had to be at the beginning. Bastards.

LIBUARY, LIBARY, CHURCH

Writing this from the libary as I am suppose to be getting some pay the rent job stuff done but before I dive into that I wanted to make my rounds online so I commented on a few journals and blogs of friends, surfed over the waves updated on a few websites I enjoy and now I'm back here.

I wanted to get a study room at the libary this morning but I'm stuck in a bathroom stall like desk trying to put everything around me for the work I need to get done before actually going to work. You know I have never been the pain for pleasure sort of fellow but I do think when I over think and I usually do that I maybe a pain for pain sort of dumb ass because I always seem to get myself swamped with stuff no matter what I do. Yes I do take on too much but I think that comes from something deep down within me that tells my innner FREAK OUT that if I do not try to do everything for everyone people will find out that I'm actually not very smart.

Man that sounded a little too college class therapy for me.

And moving on from the couch.

While sitting here at the libary delaying doing anything I really need to be doing because I'm pretty fucking tired from stress more than anything else I find myself just being amazed as I always am at the freeness of the libary. Every since I was little I was just over joyed that there was this place I could go to where I could take books, newspapers, or some cases Comics! home and I would not have to pay for them, just bring them back when finished.

For a kid growing in a family with not many dollars to rub together changing a old saying a little I never had the chance to just go into places and buy. Usually the only new things we ever got was at Christmas time and that was after my father saved all year and did without to get us things we wanted but really did not need.

I love libaries. Like bookstores they are churchs to me. I guess to compare things. Small bookstores are like city churches, libaries are like small town churches, and the chain bookstores are like Southern Baptists money makers.

Another Sunday of data entry and not getting enough done from the amount of work I need to get done at the pay the rent job. At least Wave was kind enough to stop off this morning on the way giving me a ride to work so I could grab a Pepsi and some Dunkin. Love ye.

Read this a few days ago on Wil Wheaton’s Vox blog and never put together all the connections myself until then. Funny. Shows you how powerful good mentors and teachers are also. They do not only influence individuals, they influence the course of history…Man that sounded like a sound bite from a commercial for something on the History Channel; which, is ok with me because I love that channel.
